"Secrets" of Not Gaining Weight This Holiday Season

Healthy Diet Program

We all know it can be very hard to stay on track during the holiday season. Here are some tips to make smarter food choices this year that Dr. Huml has honed over the last 40 years of clinical nutrition practice.

1) Never show up to your holiday celebration famished. Skipping meals to save calories for a bigger meal will lead to overeating. Try to eat a light snack beforehand that consists of fiber and protein such as 1-2 hard boiled eggs, 1 piece of fruit with nut butter or a piece of fiber bread.

2) Do dessert differently. Eat 1-2 bites of your dessert and really try to savor those bites without eating the whole slice of cake, pie, etc.

3) Don't drink in excess. Wine and other alcoholic beverages can pack on 200+ calories. Drink in moderation and drink 1 glass of water after each alcoholic drink.

4) use smaller plates. using a bigger plate will encourage you to put more food onto it. Try using a smaller plate which will help with portion control.

5) Enjoy each bite! One way to avoid overeating is to savor each bite and really enjoy what you are eating. Ideally, chew 30 times a mouthful.
